Limoges is the capital of the Haute Vienne department and is about 45 minutes away by car . The discovery of kaolin (the clay used in porcelain) put Limoges on the map in 1768 and it still produces half the pottery produced annually in France . It has a small area of historic streets a museum of fine art, botanic gardens , an aquarium and an architecturally noteworthy gothic cathedral as well , of course, as the usual array of shops.

It's also our nearest airport.
